Health And Safety Policy
Health and Safety Policy for Islington Carpet Cleaning
Islington Carpet Cleaning is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our carpet, upholstery and related cleaning services. We aim to prevent accidents, work-related ill health and damage to property by managing our activities in a responsible and proactive manner.
This policy sets out our approach to health and safety and applies to all employees, temporary workers, contractors and others working on behalf of Islington Carpet Cleaning at client premises, in vehicles and in any other work location.
Health and Safety Responsibilities
The management of Islington Carpet Cleaning accepts overall responsibility for ensuring that effective arrangements, resources and systems are in place to manage health and safety. Management will:
Ensure that this policy is implemented, monitored and reviewed on a regular basis to reflect changes in legislation, industry best practice and the nature of our services.
Provide appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision to enable staff to work safely and without risk to health.
Ensure that risk assessments are carried out for all key activities, that findings are recorded and that appropriate control measures are implemented and maintained.
Consult with employees on health and safety matters and encourage the reporting of hazards, incidents and near misses.
Employees and others working on our behalf also have responsibilities. All staff must:
Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions while at work.
Follow all safety procedures, instructions and training provided by the company.
Use equipment, cleaning products and personal protective equipment correctly and report any defects immediately.
Report all accidents, incidents, near misses and unsafe conditions to management without delay.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Islington Carpet Cleaning conducts risk assessments to identify potential hazards associated with our cleaning services and to determine appropriate control measures. Assessments cover typical tasks such as carpet cleaning, upholstery cleaning, stain treatment, hard floor work and use of powered equipment.
From these assessments, we develop safe systems of work that address risks including slips, trips and falls, manual handling, electrical safety, chemical use, noise, confined or restricted spaces and working in client-occupied environments. These procedures are communicated to staff through training, supervision and written guidance.
Risk assessments are reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes to our working methods, products, equipment or locations.
Use of Cleaning Products and Hazardous Substances
Our cleaning activities may involve the use of chemicals and other substances that could pose a risk if not handled correctly. To manage these risks, Islington Carpet Cleaning will:
Use cleaning products that are suitable for professional use and, wherever possible, select products with lower environmental and health impacts while maintaining effective cleaning performance.
Obtain and keep safety data sheets for all hazardous substances and ensure that staff are familiar with the associated hazards and control measures.
Implement control measures based on assessments, including ventilation, correct dilution, safe storage and appropriate personal protective equipment.
Ensure containers are clearly labelled and that products are stored securely, away from children, pets, food preparation areas and sources of heat.
Provide training on the safe handling, use, application and disposal of cleaning chemicals and solutions.
Personal Protective Equipment
Where risks cannot be sufficiently reduced by other means, appropriate personal protective equipment will be provided. This may include gloves, eye protection, masks or respirators, protective footwear and other items as identified through risk assessment.
Employees are required to use this equipment as instructed, keep it in good condition and report any damage or defects. Replacement equipment will be provided as necessary.
Equipment and Electrical Safety
Islington Carpet Cleaning uses a range of professional carpet cleaning machines, vacuums, extractors and other tools. To ensure safety, we will:
Purchase and use equipment that is suitable for professional cleaning tasks and compliant with relevant safety standards.
Inspect and maintain equipment regularly, including electrical leads, plugs, switches, hoses and moving parts, and remove any defective equipment from service immediately.
Provide training on the correct setup, operation, transportation and storage of machines and tools.
Ensure that electrical equipment is only used in safe conditions, avoiding overloading sockets, using damaged cables or operating machines in standing water.
Manual Handling and Physical Wellbeing
Cleaning work can involve lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling equipment and materials. To reduce the risk of strains and other injuries, we will:
Assess manual handling risks associated with our work and adapt methods to minimise the need for heavy lifting or awkward movements.
Provide training in safe manual handling techniques, including the correct way to lift, carry and manoeuvre equipment and hoses.
Encourage the use of trolleys, wheels and other aids where possible, and promote good posture and pacing of work.
Working at Client Premises
Our services are mainly carried out at client homes and business premises. When working on site, we will:
Respect client property and implement measures to prevent slips, trips and falls, such as managing hoses and cables, using warning signs where appropriate and maintaining a tidy work area.
Consider the presence of clients, staff, visitors, children and pets and take steps to protect them from hazards related to our work.
Follow any site-specific safety rules or induction requirements provided by commercial clients.
Ensure that access and escape routes remain clear and that fire exits are not obstructed by equipment or materials.
Training, Information and Supervision
All staff receive appropriate induction and ongoing training relevant to their role, which may include health and safety responsibilities, risk awareness, product handling, equipment use, manual handling and emergency procedures.
Supervisors and managers monitor working practices to confirm that procedures are being followed and to identify areas where additional training or support may be needed.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents and near misses must be reported to management as soon as possible. We will:
Record and investigate incidents to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
Ensure that staff are aware of emergency procedures, including what to do in the event of fire, serious injury, chemical spills or other emergencies.
Maintain basic first aid provisions in company vehicles or with mobile teams as appropriate to the work being carried out.
Monitoring and Review of this Policy
Islington Carpet Cleaning is committed to continuous improvement in health and safety performance. We will monitor compliance with this policy, review our practices regularly and update procedures when necessary. Feedback from employees and clients is welcomed as part of our effort to maintain safe and professional cleaning services across our operating area.
